If you're gonna run around and shop, you will be burning up extra gas for sure. That's why you'll need a very handy (and free!) app called Gas Buddy. It helps you find the cheapest gas close to where you are when you are already out and about.

It is available on iPhone and android.

Tip of the day time, folks!

Can you score free stuff while holiday shopping? Apparently, you can. The free app Shopkick gives you rewards or "kicks" for walking into stores like Old Navy, Toys 'R Us, Target, etc. Those kicks can be traded in for gift cards, music downloads, movie tickets, and more.

It is available for iPhone and android.

Time for your money saving tip of the day!

For some peeps, Christmas shopping means heading to the mall. I personally loathe shopping malls, but sometimes it is a necessary evil. If you gotta go in there, get in and out as fast as you can! How is this possible, you ask?

Fast Mall is a free app that helps you navigate through the mall to get where you need to go quickly. This app has many, many mall maps. It can even help you find the perfect route through the crowds if you need to use elevators instead of stair/escalators (i.e. if you are handicapped or have a baby stroller in tow).

It used to just be available for iPhone for but it is also available for android phones.

Tip of the day time!

Amazon isn't the only company to come out with a price checker app. Google Shopper will scan any barcode and search for price comparisons from a variety of online merchants, not just Amazon.

It is free and is available for iPhone and android.

Tip of the day, coming your way!

They say there's an app for everything, and for that I am glad. Amazon has a free and very handy one out called Price Check. It is available for iPhone and Android. What exactly does it do?

Say your are out shopping at brick and mortar stores (aka real stores...not online stores). You see something you wanna buy, but just aren't sure if it is the best price. You know Amazon and its merchants often offer the best deals on a variety of goods. Well, with this app you can check the price on a specific item--no matter where you are!

I've been a frugal gal for quite some time. When people ask me who my favorite thrifty living blog is I always tell them it's (hands down!) Money Saving Mom. It's written by Crystal Paine, mom/wife/homeschooler/Christian/penny pincher extraordinaire. I love it! If you've never been, then stop what you are doing and check it out. But then come back!

When I found out my favorite blogger had a written a book, I was all "I gotta get my hands on that!" So I was relieved when I got an email asking me to review it. Gosh, how I love books. Especially free ones.

But I digress. This book, The Money Saving Mom's Budget, is nothing short of fabulous. And I'll admit, sometimes I am skeptical when bloggers publish books. When I've been reading someone's blog for years I have to wonder if their new book will have enough new material to keep me interested. Not at all the case here! Crystal does not disappoint.

The book guides readers through the process of taking control of their finances, step by step. It even includes worksheets (awesomeness!) And the focus isn't just on bargain-hunting. She shows us how to more effectively use our time and organize our homes--you'd be surprised how much those two things can impact your finances! Crystal also encourages her readers to seek contentment and live more simply.

This phenomenal book is scheduled to release January 10, 2012. You can pre-order it here. I'd love to give away a copy of The Money Saving Mom's Budget to one lucky Free 2 Be Frugal reader. Here's how to enter for your chance to win:

-Subscribe to the Free 2 Be Frugal blog.

-Follow Free 2 Be Frugal on Facebook.

-Follow Free 2 Be Frugal on Twitter.

One winner will be chosen at random and posted here on December 15th...Good Luck!

Every three months you get either a check or they deposit the money you've earned back into your Paypal account. Like rebates, only a heck of a lot easier! Here's a look at some of the great gifts I've seen this year for kids:

Backyard Safari Outfitters never ceases to amaze me. They are constantly adding to their line of children's gear for outdoor exploration and play. So naturally, our son will be getting their Rock Excavation Field Kit. Retailed at just $19.99, it comes with everything a kid needs to hunt for gemstones, minerals, and fossils. My kiddos is always on a mission to collect rocks; now he will be able to identify them!

Since we have been buying up a number of tools and exploration gear, it seems only natural that our son gets the Essential Field Gear Utility Belt, also from Backyard Safari Outfitters. This tool belt allows for hands-free exploring outdoors and also retails at $19.99.

As a nature-loving family, we love to feed the wildlife and watch them enjoy our gift to them. The BSO folks have designed a Bird Watcher's Field Kit that is perfect for this activity. I can already hear my son using the three bird callers! At $24.99, this will be a gift that will get a lot of use!

And because I just can't say enough good things about BSO, the Expedition Two Hiking Stick will be a big hit for kids who love to take long hikes through the woods and parks in your neck of the woods. At just $14.99, this stout and sturdy hiking stick will accompany us on lots of walks in the future.

As the parent of a first-grader, I can tell you that learning about money is no easy task. Especially learning how to count it. The Zillionz Original Counting Money Jar is a cool gizmo that counts your change as you add it to the jar and displays the total amount digitally. It always remembers your balance--even when the batteries need to be changed! It can be had for just under ten bucks, which I am a huge fan of.

*Disclosure: I was provided with samples of these items from the good people at Team Mom for my review. The opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Here are the best of the best of goodies our family enjoys during the holiday season!

Ultimate M&M's Cookies (we use the red and green ones, of course!)

Traditional Italian Pizzelles (without the optional anise)

Julie's Fabulous Fudge (this actually doesn't classify as real baking, but it rocks anyway!)

Poor Man's Toffee (barely baking, but soooo addictive!)
Tip of the day time!

Are you looking for that certain something for that certain someone on your shopping list? Do you want to get the lowest price available for it? Of course you do!

That's why you should head on over to Price Grabber. This site allows to type in the name of the item you are shopping for and it formulates a list of the merchants who are selling it, along with the price they are asking. And it lists the best price at the top of that list. No more leafing through sales ad after sales ad for you!

Tip of the day - hip, hip, hurray!

I heard on the radio this morning that 2/3 of people who celebrate Christmas are not done their holiday shopping yet. That's a whole lot of gifts left to buy! If you are one of the many folks who prefer to shop online instead of braving the crowded stores, you know that the one serious drawback to that is shipping costs.

How can you avoid the extra expense?

Free shipping day is coming up! This year it falls on December 16th and over a thousand on online merchants are participating. Check out Free Shipping Day to find out who will ship your gifts for free,

Tip of the day, comin' right at ya!

This week I have web sites on the brain. There are so many helpful ones popping up that can help make your holiday shopping quicker, easier, and even save money. So this week I want to share some of the good ones I have found this year.

Shop It to Me is like having your very own personal shopper. You tell it what brand name or designer items are on your shopping list and they will let you know when it goes on sale! You can choose whether or not you want email from them daily, weekly, or twice a week. They do this for free. Pretty cool, eh?

Tip of the day, y'all!

Try this cool little tip Frugal Friend Annabeth shared with me:

Someone once told me this tip when I was a young newlywed, and though it is simple I will always appreciate it. When you are preparing to buy gifts for others remember to give what you have, NOT what you wish you had or what you will have someday. It sounds like common sense, but people get caught up in the holidays and forget.

Thanks for sharing, Annabeth.

Time for your money saving tip of the day!

One way to save on your holiday shopping bill is to give one gift per family instead of individual presents. I think family gifts are the better choice anyway, because you give the gift that keeps on giving--family time. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking...

-Family Movie Night Gift: buy a movie or two that is family-friendly (or a subscription to Netflix), some popcorn, candy, etc.

-Family Game Night Gift: buy a board game or two that everyone can enjoy

-Family Outing Gift: a membership or gift certificate to a local wildlife preserve/nature center, play place, children's museum, bowling alley, skating rink, movie theater...the possibilities are endless here!
