The land of frugality is overwhelming to newcomers. And sure, some people have great success with stacking coupons with deals and "buying" things for free from drug stores. And yes, some people love sending away for tons of rebates. But I always advise people to take baby steps. Try one new technique at a time so that it becomes a lifelong habit instead of a fad you tried for awhile and failed at.
Being Frugal shares my sentiments with her post, It's Not a Sprint, It's a Marathon.
Frugal Dad encourages people to Create a Habit of Frugal Living.
And Frugal Families shares 6 Frugal Living Habits.

Do you love learning new things?
I do! And I really love it when I can do it for free. The folks at HP (yes the computer people) offer a variety of online classes. New to Facebook or Twitter? They've got a class for that. Always wanted to take better photographs? They've got a class for that. Need to know how to use some software? Yep, they've got a class for that.
Click here to see which online offerings you can sign up for now. And click here to find out what other classes they offer other times throughout the year. They will email you when it becomes available again.
Cooking in bulk, or freezer cooking, is all a-buzz in the bloggy world lately. I have been doing this for some time now and can't imagine what I ever did before I started!
Now I do mine a little differently than lots of other bloggers. I don't do a whole day cooking extravaganza. That wears me out. I prefer batch cooking. I simply double or triple meals (or the makings of meals) that are cheap to make and freeze well. Like my famous taco meat. Check out what other mommy bloggers are cookin' up:
Money Saving Mom is sharing her recipe for success for planning a freezer cookin' session today. She goes pretty in-depth, so all you newbies can take note. She even shares an awesome printable planning sheets like this, this, and this.
Life as Mom shares the freezer meals she plans on making this round.
Keep watching those two as they collaborate in a Virtual All-Day Cooking Bash!

I really like to entertain. I really hate disposable cutlery and dishes. Styrofoam? Retched for the earth. Plastic? Horrid for your health. Paper? Flimsy and makes so much trash.
My new solution is to add to my real dishes inventory. My every day dishes are nothing fancy. All white with a raised white pattern of fruits. They are made by Gibson. I am pretty sure they came from K-Mart. But they are simple and elegant and work for any holiday or occasion. And apparently they were very popular! My local Goodwill and other area thrift shops are constantly selling small goupings of the set for super cheap. I've been known to score an additional set of 4 salad plates for 89 cents. Another 4 coffee cups for 59 cents. Whenever I see them I add to my "set". I have also been picking up serving dishes in plain white to grow my collection. Do they match my set. Nope. But in keeping everything white, it all goes together rather nicely.
I do the same with silverware. Did you ever notice the abundance of spare silverware at yard sales and thrift shops? No? Take a look next time. You can easily pick up a rubber-banded bunch of extra forks for a buck.
So stop buying disposable dishes and silverware. Spare the earth the extra garbage and make your home a little cozier next time you entertain. A little nicer.

Do you believe there is someone out there that could change the rest of your life? Just one person, someone you might not have even met yet? That is what happened to Ron Hall, a wealthy art dealer from Texas. He was a success story who wanted for nothing. But he was lacking in one area...relationships. Ron had drifted further and further away from his wife over the years without evening noticing. One day his wife got it into her head that they needed to serve others together since they had so much to be thankful for themselves. Before he knew it, Ron found himself signed up to serve hot meals to the hungry every Tuesday. And that was the day they met Denver Moore, sharecropper (they still have those?) turned homeless man. An unlikely friendship ensued between the two, who were living lives that were worlds apart. In spite of their differences (socially, racially, and otherwise) the two men learn that they have undeniable similarities.
This true story reads like fiction. But the reader is left with a satisfaction greater than any felt after reading a novel because they know that the best story the have read in a long time really happened. I know because reading this book gave me the sense that there are still some genuinely "good" people left in the world. And that the little things we do to connect with and help others really does make a difference after all.
If you are looking for a feel-good book, then The Same Kind of Different As Me is for you.

This Saturday, February 27th, Target is celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday! An ode to the author and his zany children's books will take place at various locations from 9-11 a.m. Children will hear readings of Seuss stories, enjoy free drinks and snacks, games and activities. There will even be giveaways!
We happened to be there while it was going on last year and my son adored it. Every kid received a goodie bag full of Seuss stuff. A fun time was had by all.
Thanks for giving me the scoop on this year's event, Brynn!

Yes, I sure did do link love already this week. On Sunday, my linky love day o' choice. However, I happened upon a neat little feature that I just have to share. I have to!
A girl after my own heart, The Shabby Chic Cottage blogger hosted "Transformation Thursday". The challenge there is to do a neat project around the house...for $5 or under. Ahhhh, frugal bliss!
Don't let the title fool you, this isn't a health food article per se. You see, in my family eating "right" means shopping for and eating what is frugal. And it changes from month to month, and sometimes even week to week.
What am I talking about?
Eating what's on sale and in season!
Last week I was sitting with a few acquaintances at a get-together and mentioned that my family's motto is "If it ain't on sale it ain't going in the cart!" This earned me a few stares. One woman asked, "You mean if your son asks for a certain kind of snack and it isn't on sale you won't get it for him?" Nope. Another woman asked, "So if your husband asks for pot roast for dinner this Sunday you won't make it?" No way.
I am not in the business of depriving my family. I just don't see anything wrong with delayed gratification. Especially when it saves us hundreds of dollars a year. I'm not so cheap that I don't ever buy roast. We don't live in rice and beans or ramen noodles. But I cannot justify eating meat that costs $5 a pound. No good deals on beef? I'll bet chicken is on sale then. If I can wait another week or two that roast will go on sale $1 or 2 a pound. And I can live with that.
And the same goes for produce. For those of us who live in America we have the luxury of being able to dine on any kind of fruit or vegetable we desire. No matter the season. We'll just fly it into the states from whatever tropical locale is growing it right now. But that luxury comes at a hefty price. The solution is to eat what is in season right in your area (or at least own country). The result is MUCH cheaper produce.
Right now it is winter. And our family is eating a lot of fresh cauliflower, broccoli, snow peas, cabbage, root vegetables like potatoes, turnips, sweet potatoes, as well as oranges and bananas. Come spring we will be adding fresh asparagus, carrots, spinach, and cherries to our meals. When summertime rolls around we will add corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, squash, berries, peaches, and melons. Then in fall it will be all about the pumpkins, apples, cranberries, and pears.
Of course you can usually find canned versions of lots of these, but isn't fresh better?

My son has been allergic to soy since birth. And then last week we got exciting news...he has outgrown it! To celebrate we are digging out some old family recipes that call for soy (and most of them do, as my heritage is Filipino). The one I will share today is called Chicken Adobo and it is so simple, yet so delicious! The key is to marinate the meat as long as possible. Overnight is best, but if you just don't have the time then do it at least an hour before you start cooking. It makes all the difference!
Chicken Adobo
Ingredients
- Split chicken breast (you can use any chicken on the bone, really)
- 3/4 cup white vinegar
- a few bay leaves
- 1 onion, sliced thin
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp. sugar
- soy sauce...lots!
- salt and pepper, to taste
- water, enough to cover
Directions
In a Dutch oven, mix together vinegar, bay leaves, onion, garlic, soy sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. The liquid should be a nice dark brown color. Place chicken in pot and put in fridge to marinate.
When ready to cook, take out the pot and give it a mix. Put in enough water to cover the top of the chicken. Bring to a boil. Then reduce heat to a slow boil and simmer. This should take about 45 minutes. It is ready when chicken starts to fall off the bone when you try to scoop it out of the pot.
Serve over rice. Yum!

One of the best ways to stock up on presents for the kiddo parties you attend all year long is to use manufacturer coupons. Yes, I said manufacturer coupons for TOYS. Where do you find them? Head straight to the source, of course!
Hasbro has created a new program to make their coupons available (and to keep customers up to date on the hottest new toys and promotions). It is called Play Saver. Did you know they are also the maker of Playskool toys? And oodles of board games?
These coupons typically have a high face value...these are not your ordinary save 25 cents coups. The best way to use them is to stack them when the toys and games are on sale at your favorite spots like Target and Walmart, who both accept manny coups.
Happy shopping!

What would it be like if you could have a place to meet up with your friends and enjoy a hot, steaming cup of coffee and eat some breakfast (that did not include Fruit Loops, and no, you did not have to make it)?
What if someone babysat your infants while you did it? Or took your preschoolers on a playdate with their friends?
What if you had the opportunity to meet other moms who respond back to you "Oh my gosh, I know what you mean!"?
What if you gave birth to a new baby and people dropped off meals to your house for 2 weeks after you brought your pride and joy home?
Imagine the possibility of all this. And no need to pinch yourself, you are not dreaming. This is all real, and it happens at MOPs. Never heard of it before? It stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and it is an international organization.
You get all this and much, much more when you join your local chapter. Yes, they have dues. In my neck of the woods they run about $50 a year. You are worth it. Your sanity is worth it. Your spirit needs it. Can't find it in your budget? Ask about scholarships and your fees may be waived if money is an issue. Or lend a helping hand and join their steering team and dues are optional.
You don't have to do motherhood alone.

What do you love to do on snow days? I'm not one for playing out in the snow, and being shut up inside this house leaves me staring at the walls. And the accents. And the furniture.
Before you know it I am leafing through my magazine stash and drifting from blog to blog. Here are some inspirations I have come across during this snowy weekend.
The Old White Cottage leaves me wanting to go junkin', er, antiquing.
Shanty 2 Chic has me itching to do some much-needed organization.
The Eck Life is gorgeous, just gorgeous. That fab blue is calling to me...
Reinvented makes my heart super-happy because it recognizes people on budgets!

Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner and everyone is talking party food! I'm not a football fan myself, but I will take any opportunity to try out new snacks. A local grocery store makes this awesome dip that reminds the taste buds of the deliciousness of buffalo wings without any of the mess! This stuff rocks, but at $6.99 a pound it's not too frugal. Here is my attempt to replicate it. It got the seal of approval from my dinner guests the other night.
Cold Buffalo Chicken Dip
Ingredients
- 2 small cans of white chicken chunks
- your favorite hot sauce
- 1 brick of cream cheese
- blue cheese dressing
Directions
Open and drain the canned chicken well. Slop into a bowl and sprinkle liberally with your favorite hot sauce (I prefer Cholula). Mix up well. Your chicken should be completely covered in the red stuff. Now cut up that brick of cream cheese into smaller pieces. Use the backside of a for to smash the cream cheese into the chicken mixture. Now pour in some blue cheese dressing until you get your desired consistency of dip.
Keep chilled until you are ready to eat. This is great with celery and carrot sticks! My fam also liked scooped it up with Triscuits.
Spend some time creating memories with your family this weekend!
Do you have a Bank of America credit card? If you do then check out this list of over 70 museums who will give you FREE admission this weekend and the first weekend of every month!
