Dear Niki,
I have been following your blog for awhile now and I admire your perseverance with maintaining a frugal lifestyle. But are you always so frugal? Don't you sometimes just splurge on something from the mall?

-Mandy

Great question! I guess the one downside to blogging is that people never get to see the full picture, no matter how transparent you try to be. I surely don't blog about every little thing my family spends money on. Yes, there are times when I slip or my hubby slips and we just want to treat ourselves. A dinner out. A new outfit. A new toy for our kiddo just because. We try to budget, but it is easy to fall off the wagon. We are all only human!

I also want to point out that frugal doesn't necessarily equal cheap. Yes, I do love shopping at dollar stores and thrift shops. I love bargains and get a thrill out of feeling like I really saved. But I don't buy everything there. Like when I want to buy clothing for myself, I want it to be something that lasts. Sometimes I luck out and find a good quality brand item at the thrift shop. And when I do I am more than happy to pay a little more for it. If I really need something and cannot find it second-hand I am willing to head to a better store for it.

If I want to buy a stuffed animal I do like to buy them from Build-A-Bear. Yes, they are pricier than other stores. But many of them are allergen/asthma friendly and if they rip or need more stuffing you can take it back to them and they will fix it up good as new. I know this because I have done it. Several times.

Spending a bit more on an item so it doesn't have to be replaced time and time again is frugal.

Rain seriously foiled my plans to hit yard sales, so I scoured the Craigslist ads to find out if there was anything going on in the thrift store circuit. There was! One of the local shops does a 50% off everything in the store event once a season.

  • Ant Habitat, new in box, $2 (perfect for an insect uint I plan on teaching)
  • Magnetic alphabet learning center, 59 cents (missing some pieces, but no worries because I have a big ole bag of spare ABC's I got from a fellow Freecycler)
  • Baby Jesus board book/puzzle set, new in box, $2 (also perfect for a unit I plan on teaching, YES I do teach at a Christian school)
  • 8 hardcover/board books for $1.61 (Isn't that the weirdest price ever? That's what happens when thrift shops have half-off sales)
Photobucket
  • Next stop, my favorite Goodwill! Here I picked up 3 gently used blouses for $5 a piece. These are from Lane Bryant, and if you are a big girl then you KNOW you expensive their clothes are! Hubby's iphone doesn't do these tops justice! The pale blue one is sheer and has a delicate flower print...very feminie. The brown/gold top is beaded...very boho. The green top is very well-cut and has a great fit.
  • Light blue beaded becklace, $1

It's Frugal Friday!

Do you notice prices creeping back up again? Gas. Groceries.

And yet somehow while everyone else is hiking up prices, Aldi keeps lowering theirs. How is it possible? I don't know and I don't care! But I am officially back to shopping there.

You have to love their new lower prices. And as a diabetic trying to improve my health, I have to love their bigger-than-ever selection of Fit & Active items. Aldi is a simple shopping experience. Simplicity and frugality are two of my goals in life, so the decision to switch was easy!

As I said yesterday I am jumping on the meal planning bandwagon with The Happy Housewife. Yes, I have been meal planning for a long, long time. But this past year I have been trying so many new recipes I've seen around the blogosphere that I have gotten away from some of our old staples. So much that I had to sit down and ask my family what they loved most.

The first task was to list 15 Favorite Meals. Next Toni is asking everyone to add 5 more meals to their list of fifteen and jot down some side dishes. So here we go...

Another 5 Meals

  1. Aldi Chili
  2. Easy Pepper Steak
  3. Baked Ziti
  4. Tuna Casserole
  5. Steak and Egg Scrambles
Side Dishes

  1. Spanish rice
  2. Refried beans
  3. Skillet corn
  4. Spaghetti with marinara
  5. Side salad
  6. Italian green beans with garlic
  7. Glazed carrots
  8. Sweet potato oven fries
  9. Cole slaw
  10. Macaroni salad
  11. Home fries
  12. Balsamic Tomato Salad

I recently scored a package of 4 coupons for a brand new product called Bounce dryer bars. They sound like a fab idea...stick one in your dryer and don't think twice about freshening/softening your laundry for 2-4 months. Sounds awesome, doesn't it? But since my son and hubby have very sensitive skin, I think we will pass ont he opportunity to try these out. It is a shame because typically I love trying out new products, courtesy of Vocalpoint.

Let our loss be your gain! The coupon package consists of one $2.50 off coupon and three $1.50 off coupons. Considering how new products are always going on sale right after their debut, you could probably stack these coupons with the deals to grab these for free or nearly so.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this post. That's it. Easy peasy. One winner will be announced on Friday evening.

My cable internet provider has finally figured out how to grant me re-entry to the World Wide Web! Woo-hoo! And so upon my return I bring you WORKS FOR ME WEDNESDAY.

Packing lunches for school is sort of a pain all around, isn't it? I mean, kids are picky eaters by nature so figuring out what they will or won't eat is the first hurdle. Then couple it with the fact that it must survive a lack of refrigeration for a few hours and cannot be heated up for them. If you have a kiddo with multiple food allergies like me, then your choices are further limited. Add to that the fact that your child's school is a peanut-free facility. Now try to figure out what you can send besides bread and water. Oh, but I digress...

As a frugal gal I loathe wasting money on countless brown paper bags and even more plastic ziplock bags. Juice boxes (ones that contain 100% real juice) are not easy to find at a bargain either. And to think of all that trash my kid is creating every day makes my stomach turn!

The solution? Get a lunchbox. If you buy a backpack at Toys 'R Us you get a lunchbox FREE! And then buy a lunch kit. What's that? A reusable sandwich container, drink container, and snack container. They have them at the aforementioned toy store, but I found a matching set at Target for $2.50 (in those cheapy bins at the front of the store). My son thinks they are way cooler than the throw-away stuff because these have Spiderman on them. And seriously, does it get better than being green, cheap, and making your kiddo happy?

Can you believe there are people who don't menu plan? I could not even begin to function without one every single week (I did have one this past week but was sans-internet so I didn't post it). But sometimes even a devoted planner runs low on inspiration. Enter The Happy Housewife.

She is working on a series on Menu Plannng 101. This isn't just for menu plannin' newbies, but for veterans too! Maybe you have been trying so many new recipes that you have lost touch with family favorites. Maybe you are stuck in a menu rut. Maybe you want to organize better, say a month at a time instead of weekly. If so you are going to want to tune in for the series. The Happy Housewife is giving assignments each week, and even though I am a little behind the times I am jumpin in now!

Here are my family's 15 favorite meals:

If you live on the East coast then you know how disgustingly humid and icky it has been for the past few weeks. Not yard sale weather by any means. What does that mean for me? Lots more trips to the thrift shop! I did go a few times in the past month, but I didn't take pics of my scores because they were bunches and bunches of books for my classroom library. Not exciting stuff. Nothing to write home about. Used books can be a dime a dozen. Not literally (unfortunately), more like 3 for $1.

Anyhoo...

This past weekend I headed over to the Goodwill with a mission. Operation find black pants! And I did succeed. I knabbed three pairs of the essential bottoms, all new with tags. And all three together were still cheaper than buying one pair from a department store.

Photobucket

  • Black capri pants (Liz Claiborne), $5
  • Black dressy trousers (Lane Bryant), $10
  • Black casual chinos (Mossimo @ Target), $4
I also picked up two educational toys for my preschool classroom. Have you ever perused through a teaching store catalog? The prices are ridiculous.
  • The Original Rollercoaster goes for $60, I paid $2
  • The Rainbow Roller goes for $35, I paid $3

You may have noticed that I have been MIA since Thursday (or maybe not, since a few pre-scheduled posts were published). My cable internet has decided to play tricks on me and so I am World Wide Web-less. I write this quick note to you live from from the public library! I will be back with regular posts soon, so long as a tech obliges my request to come save my life, I mean fix the internet connection.

Grrr!

It's Frugal Friday!

Our family has killer allergies. There seems to be no miracle meds for it so it seems that one of us is always ailing. This past week it was my poor son. Most days his Allegra provides relief. Sometimes we need to use a nebulizer, too. But sometimes he gets a persistent cough. And last week was no exception.

I have tried every OTC cough medicine there is for children. My final attempt was Delsym. People swear by this. And yet, for my son--no dice. In desperation I began to look online for homeopathic remedies. One called for a tablespoon of honey mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice. I mixed some up right quick (we always have both of these on hand) and TA-DA! Worked like magic. The best part is that you can take it as needed unlike medications. And it worked fast. My son happily went to sleep without a hitch for the first time in a week.

Here's to honey!

If you have kids then I know you do crafts. Kids love doing them, don't they? My son would do a craft every single day of the week if I let him have his way. Trouble is, I don't always have everything he needs to do the crafts he has in mind. The solution?

DLTK's Crafts for Kids! Not only is it one of the largest craft website I have ever seen for kiddos, you can also search for projects by material. Got toilet paper rolls? How about brown lunch bags? Everyone has those. Next time your kids want to create something there is no reason to say no. You've got "supplies"!

Welcome to The Teacher Feature! If you are an educator, either a teacher or homeschooler, then you know how much supplies and resources can cost. Here at Free2BeFrugal you will learn how to acquire materials frugally or better yet, free!

Today I would like to share a tip on how to get some FREE supplies for your classroom...Ask and ye shall receive!

  • Some stores give away discontinued wallpaper sample books to teachers who ask (these are great for crafts, covering textbooks, etc.)
  • Some stores will give you carpet samples of rugs they no longer sell. These are great for reading centers or circle time. Try Home Depot and local flooring stores.
  • Ask copy shops for their misprinted paper. The blank side is just fine for scratch work for math class or drawing paper.
  • Some printers will give away sample reams of paper they get from suppliers but consider too low quality to use. This would make great drawing paper!
  • Know a shop going out of business or moving soon? Ask them for their old letterhead. More scrap paper.
  • Keep your ears open! I recently overheard someone telling a story about cleaning out their office and discovering boxes of that ole track-feed printer paper. Remember that stuff (with the tear-off sides)? I quickly jumped into that conversation and asked if I could have it. Guess what I have 3 boxes of now?
  • Camera shops will give you film canisters if you ask; they only throw them away anyway. These are good for science experiments (Google it, there are bunches!) and craft projects.
  • Some grocers will give you foam platters they use for packaging meats and such. These are good for using as paint palettes. They will also usually give you boxes.
  • Join your local Freecycle on YahooGroups. People give away lots of great free items in wonderful condition all the time. Don't see what you are looking for? Tell them you are a teacher and ask if anyone has what you need. You would be surprised how generous a community it is.
  • Check Craigslist regularly. There is a free section.
  • Ask your friends and family to save you items they normally throw away: toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, tissue boxes, margarine containers, shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc. All these things are great craft supplies. There are books and websites devoted to projects using these free materials.
And finally, everyone should search using Swagbucks. It earns points which can be traded in for gift cards. My new favorite is Amazon gift cards for 45 points. I use my points to "buy" used teaching idea books and children's books for my class library.

Are you a child of the 80's? If you answered "yes", then chances are you will enjoy the Rock of Ages soundtrack. Rock of Ages is a new Broadway play starring American Idol finalist Constantine. Remember him? (Woo-hoo for a Jersey boy!) He rocks out in the rock 'n roll love story, covering a variety of 80's hits like "Waiting for a Girl Like You", "We Built This City" and "Here I Go Again".

As soon as I opened up this CD (generously sent to me by One2One Network) I knew I had to wait for my hubby to get home. Who else could share the 80's love with me better than him? And who would air guitar while I sang along to the tunes of Poison, Whitesnake, and Journey? Now I will tell you that the songs are recorded by the stars of the Broadway hit, not the original artists. Though the nostalgia was great, I secretly wished their was a Side B feature (wait, am I aging myself here with a reference to albums?) with the original tunes too.

The soundtrack left me and my hubby wanting desperately to go see this musical, which is HUGE because my hubby typically loathes going to see theatre productions. Two thumbs up, Rock of Ages!

Sometimes it is good to rest, ya know?

I am realizing more and more that my life is calling for more simplicity. And so from now on, Free 2 Be Frugal will be unplugged for the weekends. Sometimes a media fast is a good thing. I encourage all my Frugal Friends to take more time to rest and spend time with your families. It will make all the difference in how you face your week!

Fear not...the same great features will continue here during the week:

It's Frugal Friday!

This week's post is a cautionary tale. When you plunge deep into the world of penny-pinching it is easy to lose sight of what frugality really means. I remember the first time I ever checked out a dollar store. And the second time, and the third time, and the twentieth time. I could not believe the deals! I mean there was scads of junky items made in China, but there was also plenty of items I knew were worth way more than a dollar. But just because something is a "good deal" doesn't mean you need to buy it (or 3 or 5 of them, as it may be). If you are stopping by dollar stores and dropping $40 every week it is still spending $40. No matter if you leave with $95 worth of stuff! Money is money, no matter where you spend it. And dropping that kind of dough at any store (except for groceries) is silly when you are trying to live lean.

And what about all those drugstore deals? I know lots of ladies who play the drugstore game on a regular basis, snatching up "deals" on more toiletries than anyone will ever use in a lifetime. The only trouble with playing that game is that in order to make money, you have to put money out. I have been burned too many times on rebates that never came and registers that never printed out my credits/coupons. If you are low on funds, it is best to stay out of the game.

Frugality doesn't mean buying tons of stuff cheap. It means living within or below your means instead of beyond them. Being frugal is about focusing on what you need over what you want. It doesn't mean hoarding up stuff. Stuff is stuff, no matter how much you pay for it. And stuff will never make you happy. And you will never get out of debt or manage to truly save any money if you keep chasing stuff.

I'm just sayin'...
