You know what works for me? Support. Nurturing. Advice. Spiritual growth. MOPS.

What does MOPS stand for? Mothers of Preschoolers. It is an international club for mothers who have little children at home. And unlike playgroups or other mommy clubs MOPS is all about what moms need. It is not about having to "compete" with other mommies over whose child is involved in more toddler enrichment classes, or whose baby skipped crawling and just got up and walked at 8 months old. It is not a playdate where mommies try to hold a conversation while chasing after their 3 under 3.

They meet twice a month (they have childcare, bless their hearts!) and have devotionals, breakfast, guest speakers, crafts, discussion groups, and other activities all aimed to support mothers. It is a refresher on how to nurture ourselves well so we can be strong when we must nurture our children.

Yes, it is a Chrisitian based group and yes, they often meet in church faciilities. However, no affialition with said churches is necessary. Just a desire to reach out to other mothers. These ladies are like the sister you've always wanted, your best friends, your confidantes. And unlike the atmosphere at other mommy clubs I have participated in over the years, MOPS offers a judgment-free environment.

That works for this mommy.

Congratulations to the following reader, who is the randomly selected winner of a $10 Starbucks gift card:

Hillary from The Other Mama

Thanks for stopping by and entering my latest giveaway. Have a latte for me!

Everyone who knows me well knows that my nickname "Miss Google USA" is especially fitting when I am going someplace new. Since I was going to visit Ohio for the very first time (my bestie moved there because her hubby had a job offer) I just had to know what the deal was with "The Birthplace of Aviation". What is the local color like? What's fun to do there? What do Ohioans like to eat?

Food, yes. Now that's a topic I love! I came to find out (thanks, Google!) that Ohio is known for their Buckeye Candy. Yes, they are such huge college football fans that they created a candy to look like the buckeye buts their team is named after. They are like Reese's, but even more creamy and delicious! Not making it out to Ohio anytime soon? Try this recipe!

Another confectionary delight that Ohio is know for is Shaker Lemon Pie. Apparently early Shakers from that area were notoriously thrifty and hated to see lemon peels go to waste so they created a pie where the entire lemon could be used. Weird as it sounds, the lemons are so delicately thin that you hardly notice it. Try this recipe if you don't believe me!

Simply Cookies - Chocolate Chip

As a homemaker and a caregiver I am always trying to find foods to serve my family that are as wholesome as possible. Pillsbury's new SIMPLY cookies fit the bill with their natural ingredients. They use just the same kind of things in their cookie recipes that you would at home like wheat flour, pure vanilla, eggs, and skim milk. They are 100% free of trans-fat, preservatives, artificial flavors and colors, and high-fructose corn syrup.

Thanks to my affiliation with Pssst... I was recently able to try these deliciously wholesome cookies. My son had to pass because he is allergic to products containing milk, but my hubby and I enjoyed every last tasty morsel! I then saw them on saw at the grocery store so I bought up a few packages and passed them around the neighborhood.

Would you like to give them a whirl? One lucky reader will knab 4 coupons ($1.25 value each). To enter, please leave a comment telling me your very favorite kind of cookie. A randomly chosen winner will be announced here on Tuesday. Good luck!

Yes, I was away this past week, but I was not at the BlogHer conference. Boo hoo! Seems they could only accomodate 1,500 bloggers which is not a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. A few hundred other bloggers decided to not sulk and miss out on the fun of "meeting" other bloggers....so, Blog Hop '09 it is!

Here are 10 things about me:

  1. I am a 28 year old mama to one little guy. But I do not consider myself to be a mom blogger. You see, I have a whole other agenda to my blog that does not involve lots of adorable pics of my son. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I blog to save! Free 2 Be Frugal's the name, saving money is my game!
  2. This fall I am headed back to work as a preschool teacher. Teaching is about the best job in the world as far as I am concerned (second to mothering, of course).
  3. I am a read-a-holic. I read as much as I can get my hands on. Magazines suffocate my mailbox weekly and most of the ones I get are free. I am a library queen. Someday I hope to own and run my own little book shop.
  4. The freebie fanaticism began when I got pregnant with my son. I had no idea companies wanted to give me things to try for free. My addictive personality set its heart on collecting freebies from that time on!
  5. My frugal nature is the result of growing up poor. My goal as a mom is to create a life and home for my family that is modest without us "feeling poor".
  6. I have debt. There is quite a bit of it. My biggest debt is for my education (I have 2 degrees) and my hubby's. I'll never regret it! Education is everything.
  7. Using coupons gives me a thrill. I like the look of disbelief on the cashier's face. The sighs and groans of the people behind me in line have no effect on me.
  8. Yard sailing is like a competitive sport. Or at least it is for someone who has zero athletic ability. But every weekend I really DO score big.
  9. Walking out to the mailbox every day makes me smile. I love mail. You never know what wonderful things await you.
  10. I am going to a conference this year, but not a blogging conference. It is for MOPS.
And now for the moment you've been waiting for...THE GIVEAWAY!

Free2BeFrugal knows that living a frugal life can be, well, a little dull sometimes. Every now and then you just want to treat yourself to a little something. Well don't! Let Free2BeFrugal do it. Up for grabs is 1 gift card for Starbucks for $10. To win, simply leave a comment on this post telling me one new thing you've learned from visiting my site. One little way to save that you never heard of or thought of. Easy peasy! The winner will be randomly chosen and announced on Sunday.

It's Frugal Friday!

You know that old saying, "You get what you pay for"? Well, at Cost Cutters it just isn't true!

My family just got back from visiting friends and after a grueling drive back (2 adults, 2 dogs, and 1 kid) we were worse for the wear. We were in desperate need of a little freshening up! Hubby's hair was overgrown. Mine was too long and straggly, and dry and dead from lots of summer activities. Kiddo needed a little shape up. It seems while we were out of town a new haircuttery planted itself right in the middle of a new shopping center.

We were very impressed. Not only did we catch a great deal today, ($9.95 grand opening special) the regular prices look fab, too! Their own brand of salon quality hair products are awesome. With wild, naturally curly hair I have tried TONS of serums and anti-humidity products. But Cost Cutter's Silk Drops are second to none. And they treat kids like kings...no lollipops there. Kids who endure haircuts get a toy at the end of their visit. And families get loyalty cards. After 10 visits, you get a FREE haircut!

Hello, Frugal Friends! Sorry I fell off the face of earth the past few days. I hadn't meant to do that, even though I am on vacation. Our family took a roadtrip from Jersey to Ohio to visit friends. I brought along my trusty laptop so I wouldn't miss out on any good deals, coupons, or freebies I could take advantage of on vacation! Visiting other states means getting to check out stores you've never been to. Here's some of the places around this neck of the woods that have deals ripe for the picking!

  • Tim Hortons is giving away FREE blueberry donuts today
  • Panda Express has a BOGO coupon...yum
  • Meijer has a special on school supplies so when you buy one backpack you get one FREE, same goes for lunch boxes
  • Graeter's is the place to be for ice cream and Happy Hour (4-7pm)
  • CiCi's Pizza Buffet has endless amounts of food for five bucks and change, and kids 3 and under eat FREE

It's Frugal Friday!

Summertime has a way of making you long for a vacation, doesn't it? Seems like everyone you know is jetting off somewhere. And you'd like a change of scenery too, right? Of course you do!

But summer travel can be costly, what with air fare and hotel stays. A great alternative is to take a road trip to visit a friend or relative. Load up the car with a cooler full of sandwiches, drinks, and snacks and make your way to a fresh spot. And vacation doesn't have to equal lots of visits to pricey attractions. Sit your family down and brainstorm some activities that everyone is interested in. Pick the top 3. Research the area using some great sites to find fun things to do off the beaten bath to fill in the rest of the time. Don't rule out regular summertime activities like swimming, fishing, or hiking. Doing them in a new place with a different group of friends or family is fun for kids!

Here are a few sites for you to help find unique things to do:

In our house we eat a whole lot of yogurt! We are pretty choosy, too. It has to be thick and creamy or it just won't work. I flat out refuse to eat any yogurt that is runny. Bleh.

That is why I was so excited when MyBlogSpark told me they were giving me an opportunity to try out Yoplait's Thick & Creamy yogurt. I decided to try the vanilla because lately I have been on a kick eating vanilla yogurt with fresh berries and granola. Mmmmmm. Deliciously divine! If vanilla is just too plain for your taste, it also comes in a variety of yummy-sounding flavors like Blackberry Harvest, Royal Raspberry, Key Lime Pie. Is it really so thick you can write in it with a toothpick, like on the ads? You betcha!

So Niki likes yogurt. Big deal, you think. Here's the rub...Free2BeFrugal is giving away 2 gift baskets full of cutesy stationary and a coupon to try out Yoplait's latest yourself.

There are 3 ways to enter to win:

The 2 winners will be select and posted here on July 24th. Good luck!
