Hello there! Time for an update (sorry that I plumb forgot on Thursday, I have been super busy with a project...more on that later).

Here are a few things we have done lately in lieu of shopping for new things:

USE IT UP
  • Invited some company over to finish off more of the previous week's party leftovers (tons of food and beer)
  • Turned my nearly black bananas into banana muffins for snacks
  • Transformed some stale bread into french toast for breakfast
  • Persevered with the econo toilet paper we bought to try, hated it, but used it up anyway
WEAR IT OUT
  • Traded a box of books with my mom instead of hitting the bookstore
  • Hunted for a relative's old collection of Legos in the attic to give to my son instead of buying new sets
MAKE IT DO
  • Used vinegar instead of white wine in a recipe
  • Substituted ramen noodles for angel hair pasta in a recipe
  • Broke off a pencil's eraser and used it as a replacement back for an earring
DO WITHOUT
  • New shoes for me when the dog ate my black flats
  • DVR for all of us
  • Lattes before church for me and hubby
  • Visiting the new indoor water park everyone is raving about (way too much $)

How are you doing?

It's Frugal Friday!

Today I am gonna continue to sing the praises of thrift stores, particularly Goodwill. I know, I know, I say it all the time. But my boy just had a growth spurt and the weather is turning so I wisked the two of us away to thrift heaven. After 2 hours of digging through racks and racks I found treasure. And boy, did I strike it big!

I left with 5 tops and 7 pairs of shorts (all new with tags from brands like Mossimo, Calvin Jeans, and Nike.) And a silver Oneida serving piece. For $30. At Goodwill it is not uncommon to find items new with tags because Target and other stores send off unsold merchandise there. And smart shoppers like me reap all the benefits of their generosity.

Thrift stores. Sweet deals.

Thomas & Friends Live on Stage 2009: Sir Topham Hatt & Thomas

Have you heard? Thomas & Friends are coming to town! The popular steam engines are starring in a brand-new show, Thomas & Friends Live! On Stage: A Circus Comes to Town. If you have train fans at home you'll want to take them to see the 90 minute musical adventure.

Now going to see a show isn't always the most frugal thing you can do, but I do try to take my family to see at least one a year, usually for a special occasion like a birthday or holiday. Thanks to my very generous friends at MomSelect I will be taking my little train enthusiast to see the show!

Can't make it to the show? Here are 6 FREE all new coloring/activity sheets for your Thomas fans to enjoy:

Ya know what works for me? My fire bowl! Now it was not too frugal to start with, but if you want to invest in something for your home this is a good thing to pick this season. Or you could do like I did and ask for one for Christmas.

Our fire bowl is serving us well for at-home entertainment in these rough times. We no longer feel secure enough to make dinner plans out with other couples, to head out to take in a flick at the theatre, or buy tickets to a show. Financially the world is uncertain so we have been spending much more time at home. Here are the top reasons we love our fire bowl:

  • We can make s'more in our own backyard, which beats getting dessert out in my book
  • We love having friends and families over for potluck dinners and evenings spent around a fire (if the friends bring over a few brews that adds to the fun!)
  • It allows us to sit out on nights that would otherwise be too chilly for us to be outdoors
  • It keeps the buggies away from the patio, letting us sit on on milder evenings
  • We now have a way to get rid of all the wood from the tree we chopped down last year
  • I've been told that the ashes are good for the garden
Head on over to We Are THAT Family for more WFMW entries!
Plus stay tuned for next  Wednesday when we turn the tables
and ask you the readers what works for you guys!

I've received some emails asking me how my seedlings are doing so far. So here is my gardening update.

It is not going so well...

I started from seed for the first time and all was just fine and dandy. I bought good seeds (Burpee), filled up little containers with good starter soil, watered daily, and put them on a sunny windowsill. I was amazed when they started to germate...oh, how they grew and grew! But a friend told me they were "leggy" which I had never heard of. I ignored her comments and kept watering. They grew taller and taller, skinnier and skinnier. They never grew their second sets of leaves. They reached up for the sun and fell over.

Rest in peace, little seedlings. I guess it is back to square one. Once frost is over I will be buying plants from the nursery. A little bird told me that starting from seeds is better done with special grow lights that are placed right over the containers. That doesn't seem frugal to me at all. So onward with my plant buying!

Team Mom recently asked me to be part of a new focus group called Music Moms. Thrilled at the aspect of listening to music other than that of Laurie Berkner Band and Music for Aarvarks I jumped at the chance! It has been several years since I have been able to listen to any non kid-oriented CDs in my car, so I am a wee bit out of the loop muscially. Just a bit.

But I still know good sound when I hear it, and The Birth of Cornelius brings it! It has a soulful style driven by acoustic R&B. Corneille has been called one of the hottest new stars of 2009. It is definitely a great listen for a night at home. I enjoy these tunes with a glass of wine and a nice, hot bubble bath. Hey, even moms need a little "me" time.

For more information on this new voice, click here.

What do you like to jive to when you are kid-free?

Have you ever had any problems with stores accepting your coupons? Yesterday I had an awful time of it at Walmart. They were highly suspicious of some internet printable coupons I printed out from my email from two reputable product manufacturers.  They denied that they accept the coupons and even after I cited from their store policy, they continued to deny that I could use them. It was a long and agitating battle that ended with me getting my coupons taken off the bill but told it was "my last time".

The whole situation left me unhappy. I am an honest couponer trying to save a few bucks. I work hard at finding the best, legitimate sources of coupons.

I plan to print the store policy out and carry it with me from now on. I highly encourage you to do the same! Hopefully it will add to my credibility the next time I am questioned.
