Have you been to the movie theater lately? It's scary, and I don't mean in a horror flick type way. I mean your wallet will be shaking in its boots when its all said and done. Here's the breakdown from last time we went:
2 Adult tickets $20
1 Child ticket $7
Popcorn for us to share $6
2 small drinks $8
1 pack of candy $4
TOTAL SPENT = $45
Sure we could have saved a bit more. If we had gone to an earlier show on a weekend day we could have saved two whole dollars on our adult tickets; kids prices are always the same. I know lots of people smuggle snacks and candy into the theater (and wedid it when we were younger, but now if you get caught you'll be asked to leave). I'd be mighty angry if I got kicked out after I paid $25 for tickets. So its not worth the risk.
So unless something really special is being shown at the theater, like a 3-D flick (or we get a gift card as a gift) we stay out of the theaters. And we buy DVDs and have our own movie nights at home. Now I am aware that it might sound crazy to some of you that I am claiming that purchasing movies is frugal, but hear me out. Videos can be found fairly cheaply (from $5-14) at the big box stores like Target and Walmart. Even if you ended up paying full price for a new release it would be way less than a night at the movies! And you could watch it whenever you want, over and over again. Of course we don't buy every single movie we want to see, but we will buy the kids movies and ones we just know we will love. Making your own popcorn at home can be done for pennies and you can find awesome sales on bags of candy. For an authentic feel you can get the movie boxes of candy from stores like Dollar Tree for $1 each. It beats $4! And we bought a couple of plastic popcorn buckets there too that look just like the bags at the cinemas.
Movie nights at home work for me!

We don't go to the movies (maybe once per year), because we have to add a babysitter to that total too!
We have purchased many of the old live-action Disney movies, because we watch them over and over. But, we also have a Netflix membership, so we can rent movies (without having to take the kids to the store). We don't have cable, so we have family movie night every Sat. night with either our purchased movies or a Netflix movie.
Great post!
I completely agree, movies just cost too much these days! I like the dollar movies. It's only $1 per ticket, but you can still rake up quite a bill on the concessions if you're not careful, so we always try to eat our meal right before the movies, that way all we'll want during is popcorn and a drink.
For most movie nights we Redbox it. $1 for the rental and we have our own drinks and popcorn.
They kick you out for bringing your own snacks?!?!? I've never heard of such a thing. I can imagine if I walked in with a grocery bag full of microwaved popcorn and cans of soda, but a water bottle and a bag of trail mix in my purse never hurt anyone!
One of the first times I went out (as a group) with my husband, I remember being shocked that they let him waltz right in with a Starbuck's drink in hand. Since then, my sneaking isn't as sneaky because I finally figured out that theatres here don't care!
@ Katie...I've never been kicked out, but I have seen others kicked out for bringing in outside food.
@ Corrie...I didn't even realize I neglected to factor in babysitting. I added up how much it would cost for the whole family to go. Yeah, if you wanted a date night most people would need to pay a sitter. Fortunately we are very blessed and have 2 sets of grandparents that live in-state and willingly babysit in exchange for the love and affection of our son!
:)
@ Ashley...Ya know, we used to have a cheapo theatre here that played movies that were a few months old and they closed it down. They didnt get a lot of customers, which I cannot believe. Who doesn't want to pay only a buck to go to the movies, right?
:)
Oh and it's so much more relaxing too! Great post!
